EMDR Therapy for Veterans
Processing Trauma. Moving Forward.
EMDR can help veterans process traumatic experiences that continue to affect everyday life.
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a psychotherapy approach used to address distress related to traumatic or difficult experiences. Veterans may carry memories from combat, military sexual trauma, injuries, loss, or other experiences during their service that continue to affect them after returning home.
During EMDR therapy, a trained therapist helps clients work with distressing memories while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other forms of alternating stimulation. The goal is to help the brain process these experiences so that the memories may become less distressing and have less impact on everyday life.
Learn More About EMDR Therapy
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured psychotherapy approach designed to help people process distressing memories and experiences. EMDR is commonly used in trauma treatment and may be an option for veterans who continue to experience distress connected to events from their military service.
EMDR therapy involves several phases, including learning about the client’s history, preparing for treatment, identifying memories to work on, and processing those memories. During parts of the process, the therapist may use bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating taps, while helping the client focus on aspects of a distressing experience.
Every veteran’s experiences and treatment needs are different. A trained mental health professional can determine whether EMDR may be appropriate based on the individual’s symptoms, history, and treatment goals. For some veterans, EMDR may be incorporated into a broader treatment plan for trauma-related concerns, including PTSD.
You deserve help.
Veterans may carry difficult or traumatic experiences long after military service has ended. Memories connected to combat, loss, injury, military sexual trauma, or other experiences can continue to affect thoughts, emotions, relationships, and everyday life. Asking for help with these experiences is not a sign of weakness.
EMDR therapy provides a structured approach for working with distressing memories and trauma-related concerns. Rather than requiring you to describe every detail of an experience at length, EMDR focuses on helping you process memories, thoughts, emotions, and physical responses with support from a trained therapist.
You do not have to work through difficult experiences alone. A therapist can talk with you about your concerns, treatment goals, and whether EMDR may be an appropriate option for you. At Freedom Fighters Therapy, treatment can be tailored to your individual experiences and needs.
